Emergency Instructions

Students with disabilities should:

  • Know the exits on every floor where they have classes
  • Identify rescue assistance areas in advance
  • Do NOT use elevators during an emergency

If You Cannot Use Stairs

During an emergency:

  • Go to the nearest designated rescue assistance area (if safe)
  • Remain there until help arrives
  • University Police and first responders will check these areas

Also:

  • Alert faculty, staff, or classmates
  • Ask them to notify emergency responders of your location

Assistance for Students

  • Students who are visually impaired may need assistance reaching an exit.
  • Student with mobility or other disabilities may need assistance accessing evacuation routes.
  • ALL students are responsible for identifying exits and rescue locations in advance.

Rescue Assistance Locations

APSARUKE WEST

  • 1st floor: West entrance
  • 1st - 3rd floors: East and west stairwell landings

ART ANNEX

  • No designated rescue area. Use accessible west exit.

CISEL

  • 2nd floor: North and west stairwells
  • 3rd floor: North and west stairwells

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

  • 2nd - 4th floors: Center stairwells

CITY COLLEGE

Tech Building

  • 2nd floor: Top of north stairwell
  • 2nd floor: Stairwell between elevator and Room B012

Health Sciences Building

  • North and south side stairwells

LIBERAL ARTS

  • 2nd - 8th floors: South stairwell (to the right when facing the elevators)

LIBRARY

  • 3rd floor: Main stairwell
  • 2nd floor: Near west/reference desk entrance

MCMULLEN

  • Center stairwell: Basement, 2nd, and 3rd floors

PETRO HALL

  • Central stairway landings on each floor

PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDING

  • No designated rescue area. Use accessible exits.

RIMROCK HALL

  • Central stairway landings on each floor

SCIENCE

  • 2nd floor: Northeast, southwest, and southeast stairwells

Important Reminders

  • Ask someone to notify emergency personnel of your location if needed
  • Keep stairwell doors closed
  • Do not re-enter buildings until cleared

Note

"Rescue assistance areas" refers to designated locations where individuals may wait for emergency personnel.  This terminology does not imply ADAAG compliance requirements for newer buildings.
